It was a scorcher of a Saturday this past weekend for the third running of the VP Racing Fuels ET Bracket Series on July 18th at Virginia Motorsports Park. We want to thank everyone who came out, braved the heat and took to a hot racetrack to enjoy stiff competition and ended with four tough racers ending in the winner’s circle after a hard fought day of racing.
Hoosier Tire Super Pro saw seven tough rounds of eliminations come to an end with a door car and a dragster fighting it out for the win. Sandston, Virginia’s Larry Miller wheeled his ’68 Chevelle to the finish line ahead of Bruce Hensley from Unionville to claim the victory. Miller took a reaction time advantage and a dead on 5.927 elapsed time to victory while Hensley’s dragster pushed under his 4.52 dial in by just .005 of a second taking him out of contention for the win. Davis Adkins and Brian Crumpler were the semi-finalists while Steve Newcomb, John Goodman and Dustin Whitlow were the quarter-finalists. Pro ET filled the staging lanes for this third race of the series but it came down to two familiar faces in Keith Dunkum, Jr. and Scott Halsey. Halsey, the reigning 2019 Footbrake champion at VMP, rolled into the finals by way of the bye run in the semi-finals and Dunkum wheeled his way past Jacob Jackson’s Belvidere. Dunkum took a considerable reaction time advantage in the finals and drove the finish line like a seasoned veteran going 6.040 on his 6.03 dial-in to defeat Scott Halsey’s dead on 7 run, all based off the reaction time advantage. Glenda Cochran, Lance Miller and Russell Cannon were the quarter-finalists. For the complete breakdown of Pro ET, click HERE.
Pro Bike had the familiar faces and some of the toughest names in the game faced off all day long until the finals. Derek Burkhead, Sr. and Craig Marable, the reigning 2019 Pro Bike champion at VMP, pulled into the water box for the final time on Saturday to face off. Burkhead took a reaction time advantage and never looked back as Marable was slightly late in the finals and ran off his dial-in creating a window that Burkhead slammed shut on his way to the winner’s circle. Derek Burkhead, Jr. was the lone semi-finalist at the third points race of the season. For the complete breakdown of Pro Bike, click HERE.
Battery Barn Jr. Dragsters was not running for points due to NHRA’s Eastern Conference Finals ongoing in Charlotte but the competition level at Virginia was tough as nails. Nevaeh Gilbert came off of a win at the Old Dominion Duels and kept the hot streak rolling, claiming the win at the third VP Fuels ET Bracket Series event over Justin Kerby. Chloe Geryes from Prince George, VA was the lone semi-finalist while Louis Crockett, Ashton Sheppard and Mallory Mattox were the quarter-finalists. Most Wanted took to the track on Saturday as well and the Top 10 racers on the list battled it out for spots all through the list. The biggest change was at the top of the heap as Ray Watt’s silver Chevelle overtook Mark Austin’s Mustang to pick up the belt and become #1 on the list heading through the hot summer months and for nearly a month until the next list race on Saturday, August 15.
Bob Avalos went back to his winning ways on Friday night with his ’00 Camaro, taking the win in L&W Racing Transmissions Street ET. The popular quarter-mile, footbraking category has become a competitive staple on select Friday evenings through the year.
The next VP Fuels ET Bracket Series event on schedule will be a few weeks away on Saturday, August 15. Don’t fret – plenty of bracket racing is on tap within the next few weeks as the PDRA series takes center stage this week with Edelbrock Bracket Bash on the class roster. Loose Rocker Promotions brings their Flatout Gaskets Colonial Classic to the Park the following week with the popular big money payout structure for both Super Pro & Footbrake.
