The FuelTech Fall ET Challenge on November 13-14th brought in brisk temperatures, high winds and a lot of obstacles to hurdle over and fight to complete. Saturday evening brought in a quick drop in temperature as the sun went down and after multiple oil-downs and an on-track incident that created a tough situation for all involved, resulting in an early round split of the purse in both categories.
Sunday brought cool temperatures once again, but, sunny skies and a near flawless day on-track with minimal downtime and a lot of tough competition on track. Johnny Swink wheeled his Lexington, Virginia based ’70 Nova to the winner’s circle defeating the ’07 American dragster driven by Mr. No Limit Promotions himself, Wesley Washington. Randy Midgett and Danny Mattera bowed out in the semi-final round while Kenny Snyder, Lee Dixon, Chris Mancini and Jerry Rucker rounded out the quarter-finalists. The Footbrake48 shootout saw tough competitors each day and a ton of close racing throughout the day on Sunday with some of the best bottom bulbers in the area. Robbie Darnell’s ’67 Chevy II outlasted them all, coming in from Mechanicsville, Virginia and running in the 5.40 range all day long. Darnell defeated Jonathan Martin in a final round where both drivers left a little before the green light but Martin left first as the slower entry. Sean Sparkman and Brandon Michaels were semi-finalists while Todd Atkinson, Julian Waller and James Sparkman, Jr. bowed out in the quarter-finals. The drag racing season finale is coming up next weekend, November 26-28, with the eBay Motors Turkey Trot Triple 10s over Thanksgiving weekend.
